Kylie could remember the day clearly, she had been ten and it had been the nicest day of the year…so far. She could remember hoping that the air would get warmer, though most of the people who lived here were complaining that this was one of the hottest days they’ve ever seen. The breeze had made her arms erupt in goose bumps, though the maid was far to light headed to come to work, heat stroke her parents told her when she asked where Shadi was.
Canada was far to cold for her liking, her family had been living here for almost two months now, and they had come too late to enroll her and her sister Abbey in school. It was alright, the girl’s private school back in Australia was far beyond the public school’s here point in learning. Although Kylie had been in grade four when her Grandma had gotten sick, Kylie had just finished fifth grade math, and was about to start fifth grade reading. Geography had been scheduled to start a week after she left, though the school here in Canada didn’t start that until grade six.
The wind has lifted her raven hair off of her neck as she raced her sister down the trail, her eight year old sister was fast, and was right behind her. As easily as if they moment had this morning Kylie could still feel the dirt under her bare feet, the feeling of the cold air burning her lungs as she took deep breaths. The country side was flat and good for races like these, this wasn’t the first time the girls had raced each other over the land, and in fact they had worn a trail right across the grass leading into the woods. The route was burned into Kylie’s memories, starting at the old barns doors, across their back yard and into the woods, over the foot wide stream, out of the woods, through the corn field and then keep going until you hit the highway. The run was almost 2 miles and always left the sisters breathless and holding their sides struggling to stay standing as they argued over who won.
Kylie always won, always, but sometimes she pretended Abbey did, just so her sister would race again with her instead of getting fed up. This was not one of these times, Abbey was getting better and this race would be close, in fact Kylie was afraid she might lose. Kylie let it all go as she started to cross the gravel drive way of the house they always thought was abandoned, even though sometimes they saw a rusty old car in the garage when the garage door’s were left open. She wasn’t sure what noise it was that caught her attention and got her to stop dead in her tracks, her sister’s body slamming into hers. Was it the angry shouts? The screen door slamming? Or maybe the sound of sneakers against the balcony? Kylie never knew what she did know was that the house was not empty like they had thought.
Abbey’s shout of surprise had been a background noise as Kylie picked herself up looking up at the boy who was staring at her with his mouth hanging open. The tears had streamed silently down his cheeks as her closed his jaw taking a couple steps backwards towards the door. Suddenly the sound of a pan hitting something hard, a wall maybe? Had shattered the heavy silence, the boy had jumped forward almost tripping down the stairs. Kylie remembered the words very clearly,
“Abbey go tell Mama I won’t be home for a while,”
that was it; her sister had given her a weird look but had obeyed.
"Won't your mother be mad?"
he had questioned softly, and a small timid smile crossed Kylie's face as she shook her head,
"No Mama's never mad about anything."
The silence went on for another moment the shouts continuing from inside the house, the house that didn’t belong. It seemed more like something you would find in the city, but instead here it was, stuck in the middle of no where.
The boy’s quiet tears continued to make their way down his face until, Kylie started to cry herself the scene just broke her young foolish heart. Suddenly the boy was down the steps and they were hugging each other tightly as they cried until their eyes ran
dry.
The day had been five years ago, almost to the day and Kylie and Daniel never talked about it ever, so why that night did she dream of it? She hadn’t had that dream in almost two years, but here she was crying quiet shaking sobs, her arms wrapped about her mid section. Since then Daniel and Kylie had been inseparable, exploring the forest, lying out in the fields, climbing trees anything that they could think of, to get Daniel away from that awful house. But today had been different, they had followed the stream out until they had found a small pond, it had reached to her waist and was at least three meters across. The weather seemed hot to Kylie now that she had gotten used to the cold and she had been sweating, but she didn’t have a bathing suit.
Daniel had seen her in her underwear before, but they had been little it hadn’t meant anything, Daniel hadn’t hesitated as he pulled off his shirt and jeans. When he had resurfaced he had looked at her with questioning eyes as Kylie debated what to do, suddenly realizing a small smile crossed his features,
“I’ll turn around,”
he promised and covered his eyes spinning to face away from her. With a sigh Kylie had turned her back, afraid that her older friend would peak he was sixteen after all, but she couldn’t force herself to take off her clothes, it felt weird somehow. She could almost feel Daniel’s impatience radiating off of him, he wanted to swim and she was keeping him from it. Kylie was ashamed as she sat down on the bank of the pond
“I can’t do it,”
the words were soft, not wanting to show any emotion. The boy had turned, and his face looked sad as he came to sit beside her, he had put his arm around her. Kylie remembered the cool feeling of his wet skin against her and the content feeling of leaning her head against his shoulder.
“I’m sorry,”
The whisper was small and feeble and the next thing she knew she was under water, she came up to the air coughing. Above her stood Daniel looking triumphant, he had jumped in next to her chuckiling all the way, his smirk was enough to make Kylie blush.
“I can see through your clothes now you know,”
The statement made her cheeks flame, worse then they already were, she crossed her arms and stood wanting to get out but tan arms had snaked around her waist. Soon her tank top was over her head and she stood in her bra a shocked expression on her face, but her hands had slid her short jean cut offs down past her waist, not wanting Daniel to do it himself.
